The coupling head should provide the connection between the Offshore Loading System and the shuttle tanker bow coupler.

  • It should consist of a steel spool piece with a flange at the lower end for connecting to the catenary riser.
  • At the other end, there should be a yoke for connection to the tanker gripper claws.
  • An Offshore Loading System shutdown valve should be contained within the spool piece

In the idle condition, the coupling head should rest on the seafloor, with its pickup line remaining attached to a surface marker buoy and a pickup buoy.  The entire system should be oil-filled, with the valve at the coupling head closed when the system is idle.
