Subsea equipment insulation?

asked Mar 3, 2016 in Subsea by rbidong (880 points)
When required, as happened quite often in offshore drilling, external insulation be applied to the system to meet the required thermal insulating properties. Can someone share your experience on what should cover?

The insulation system for subsea should:

  • Provide the insulation properties at the design water depth as required by the flow assurance analysis as described in the contract documents.
  • Not hinder system functionality.
  • Not susceptible to damage during installation.
  • Be included in the piping flexibility analysis.
  • Be compatible with the plan for corrosion protection.
  • Be of seamless construction (e.g. not have any gaps) or poured.
  • Be compliant with the equipment it is adhered to (e.g. not crack, open up gaps, etc.) during installation and operation over the design life.
  • Be applied after final assembly and FAT, but before system integrity test.
