You should consider the following sizing criteria:

  • For onshore facilities, the location and size of the storage tank should depend upon the frequency and means of delivery and the security of supply.
  • For offshore facilities, the size of the treated storage tank should provide adequate diesel for worst-case 24-hour operation.

Make sure the pumps are equipped with minimum flow protection so that excess diesel routed back to the diesel storage tank.

Protection against ignition of tank contents due to static electricity, lightning, and stray currents should be in accordance with API RP 2003.  In addition, all tanks should be supplied with grounding pad(s).

Ensure the tank is equipped with an automatic or manual shut-off valve, located outside the area being served.

An open vent or relief should be provided to discharge either to a safe area or to a closed vent system where the pressure should never exceed the working pressure of the tank.  The vent should be sized for the maximum filling rate, assuming no consumption, and should be equipped with a flame arrestor.
