Premium Class drill pipe has become the NORM in the industry for drilling, while Class 2 has been rarely used by most Operators.

Premium Class Class 2
Tube wall thickness (% remaining wall) >= 80% >= 70%
Maximum Allowable Slip Cut (% remaining wall) >= 90% >= 90%
Minimum Tool Joint Outside Diameter 80% of tube

Refer to API RP 7G-2 “Recommended Practice for inspection and Classification of Used Drill Stem Elements” for more information.
