Common cause failure is the failure of more than one component or system due to the same cause or initiating event. It is particularly important to look for common cause failure modes when analyzing safeguards to assess whether they are IPLs. CCF can involve the initiating event and one or more safeguards, or the interaction of several safeguards. All of the safeguards affected by the CCF should only be considered as a single IPL (rather than each safeguard being credited as an IPL).
