Following velocities can be used for preliminary pipe sizing:
- Water and other liquids 0.5 to 5 m/s
- Air and other gases 10 to 20 m/s
- Saturated steam (dry) 15 to 30 m/s
- Superheated steam 30 to 60 m/s
- Vacuum pipes 10 to 100 m/s
Note: Above guidelines are only applied for piping not containing solids or two phase flow.
