What are the main components of a HP Mud Pump?

Each system is unique to its own design and selection, but here is an example of a  HP Mud Pump rated at 2,200 HP with maximum pressure 7,500 psig

  • Two 1,100 hp (820 kW) AC electric motors
  • One suction pulsation dampener
  • One discharge pulsation dampener
  • One high pressure pop off safety valve
  • Utility systems including a recirculating liner spray system, a lube oil system, and field instruments
  • One centrifugal charge pump (water)
  • One centrifugal charge pump (NAF)

The HP mud pump is a large, high pressure, positive displacement pump used to circulate the mud. The HP Mud Pump is designed for circulating drilling fluid under high pressure (up to 7500 psi) down the drill string and back up through the BOP.

The high pressure mud pumps and centrifugal charging pumps should be operated remotely from the driller’s control room and locally from the mud pump room. Pump transfer control should be from the driller’s console. It should include:

  • Two AC electric motors
  • Suction pulsation dampener
  • Discharge pulsation dampener
  • One high-pressure pop-off safety valve
  • Utility systems including a recirculating liner spray system, a lube oil system, and field instruments
