FPSO Roles and Characteristics

asked Apr 20, 2014 in Offshore-Upstream by Normandy (21,040 points)

A FPSO has some very unique roles and characteristics compared to a fixed platform:

  • Provide a safe environment for production operations
  • Provide a suitable “platform” for oil production, crude oil storage & offloading
  • Provide facilities to separate, export or dispose of any associated fluids and contaminants
  • Provide suitable utilities and accommodation to support production operations
  • Provide facilities which will deliver a high level of production uptime
  • Provide facilities with the reliability & integrity for life of field operations

A FPSO also:

  • Can be disconnected from their moorings, so FPSO is optimal for areas that experience severe weather conditions
  • Can be moved, and a better economical solution for more marginal fields, in that the FPSO can be moved to another development and redeployed once the original field has been depleted
  • Is a best choice for development when there are no existing pipelines or infrastructure to transfer production to shore
