Why are Floating LNG (FLNG) units so large compared to other vessels?

The FLNG vessels are much larger compared to other vessels due to:

  • Power Generation: Liquefaction has large power requirements
  • Process Plant: Large size in similar to requirements for FPSOs
  • Large Liquefaction Plant
  • Spacing between modules to reduce accidental blast loads
  • Storage requirements:
    • Parcel size ~130,000 m3
    • Buffer capacity
    • Condensate storage
    • LPG storage
    • Refrigerant inventory storage

FLNG are expected to be the most expensive non-military vessel in the world.
