During Concept Selection of a FPSO, consider the following inputs into a Basis of Design:

  • Well fluid properties:
  1. Oil gravity
  2. Gas oil ratio
  3. Oil composition
  4. Production profiles
  5. Impurities, H2S, CO2, etc.
  • Metocean conditions
  1. Cyclonic and non cyclonic data
  2. Wave (Hmax, Hs, directionality data)
  3. Wind
  4. Current
  5. Etc.
  • Soil conditions

General Inputs should also be considered as Functional Requirements:

  • Production requirements and specification:
  1. Production volumes for oil, gas, water etc.
  2. Export specifications etc.
  3. Cargo storage volume, buffer storage requirements etc.
  • Lifetime integrity requirements and design life:
  1. Field life v design life e.g. 20 years
  2. “No docking” requirement
  3. Design safety factors to reduce risk of integrity issues
  • Operability & Maintainability:
  1. Redundancy and sparing
  2. Access for maintenance/inspection/mechanical handling
  • Safety, environmental and regulatory requirements
