Steel piping system on FPSO suffers blocked nozzles due to corrosion

asked Sep 5, 2014 in Material by bbenoit (710 points)
FPSOs with steel pipework are frequently suffering blocked nozzles due to corrosion.  I would like to investigate alternative piping mateials to full deluge testing as this contributes to corrosion of topsides pipework and damages electrical equipment.

Corrosion in firewater and deluge systems has been proven to reduce by use of exotic materials and/or flushing with potable water after testing.

However, use of exotic materials such as Copper nickel or Titanium introduces challenges with fatigue and mechanical strength.

Movement between pre-assembled units can cause fatigue if not allowed for, and small pipe connections should be well supported. Such pipework should also be protected from damage from swingling loads…
